Oh So Happy

Every year there are over 100 million prescriptions written worldwide for antidepressants known as SSRI's, or Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors. These drugs are now going generic, increasing in availability and spreading increasingly fast.

Serotonin, a neurotransmitter with a powerful impact on mood, is normally active in the brain for a set period and then reabsorbed. SSRI's work by slowing this rate of absorption.

Quick Eating for College Athletes

This was a shortcut, simplified approach of mine to get some of the college athletes I work with to stop living off of Top Ramen. Excuse the profanity. I write that way occasionally when I don't have to publish in mainstream publications.

"I could write a lengthy piece on all sorts of meals with elaborate recipes and create a perfect nutritional plan with precise measurements on everything. If I did, you'd all glance at it for about five seconds and toss it aside

Post Workout Nutrition

If you're an athlete or anyone who trains hard in the gym and you aren't addressing post workout nutrition, you're wasting a considerable amount of your efforts.

Most of the day, your meals should be centered on healthy fats, fruits, veggies and protein. Grains and any other dense, starchy carbohydrate source are best kept to a minimum. This will allow stable insulin levels, increase fat burning and promote positive health

Taz's Paleo Pizza

Tamaryn Venter, aka "Taz" is an athlete from New Zealand who recently took first place in a competition for "Fittest Woman in Australasia." For those of you who aren't up to speed on geography, that's the countries of Australia and New Zealand, plus all the other little surrounding islands.

Taz describes her eating habits as "Paleo style," which essentially means that she eats meat, fish, nuts, seeds, vegetab

Turmeric and Circumin

The Indian spice turmeric has been getting quite a bit of attention recently because a substance it contains called circumin has been shown in numerous studies to have a variety of powerful health benefits.

The really cool thing about it is that despite its potential to have positive drug-like effects in the body, it's actually good for you at the same time. Much of the research on circumin has been on it's anti-tumor and a

Reader Mail - My Friends Freezer

"There are going to be times when I won't have access to my fridge (every Wed. evening because I'll be staying at my friend's in Rapid for school) so are those South Beach meals really bad or are they OK? I was thinking I could put some in my friend's freezer or do you have a better idea?"

The main reason behind the success of things like the South Beach Diet or anything else that involves a bunch of pre-pre

Step Away From the Fryer

You've gone to the store and sought out wild-caught Alaskan salmon for dinner. You've just made a great choice by selecting one of the most nutritious foods nature has to offer. But now, what do you do with it?

First, step away from the fryer. Breading and deep frying a quality salmon fillet is the equivalent of smothering a perfectly cooked filet mignon in ketchup. It's another one of those things that friends aren't suppo

Know Your Salmon

Wild salmon consist of five distinct species. Each of those species has different characteristics for taste, texture, color and nutritional content.

King, or Chinook salmon is the largest, least common and most sought after salmon. It's generally only found in high-end restaurants. It has an incredibly high level of Omega 3 fatty acids and is known for its rich, red flesh and firm texture. They weigh twenty pounds on averag

Alaskan Salmon

I just got back from a month long trip working as a commercial salmon fisherman in Alaska.

It's quite an educational experience; knowing exactly where your food comes from and how it's handled along the way.

We fished in a portion of Bristol Bay, the filming location of The Deadliest Catch during the cold, dark and certainly miserable winter months. The are

Buy a Buffalo

Buffalo is a fantastic nutritional choice, especially compared to the cornfed, hormone-laden beef you get at the supermarket. It's lower in total fat, higher in protein, and the fat that it does contain is world's better in Omega 3 content.

The problem is that it's kind of pricey. It's tough to bring yourself to pay five or six bucks a pound for ground buffalo when you can buy the cow version for two.
